How to Quickly Report a Pothole and Other 311 Incidents in Ottawa

July 16, 2019
HOWTO

Let's face it, as in most North American cities, the majority of Ottawa citizens have to commute to work every day using some kind of transportation. In a 2016 study from Statistics Canada, it was found that the average one-way commuting time in Canada was 26.2 minutes. In a year, that's almost 230 hours a year spent on the road!

As so much time on the road, we all know potholes can become very annoying during our driving and biking experiences - not to mention our budget when it comes to repairs - especially when we constantly hit the same pothole everytime! This is even worse for us cyclists, already having to worry about so much construction...

Wouldn't it be nice to have magical powers, and simply snapping a picture would get rid of those potholes? Well, it is now possible to report a pothole to the city of Ottawa in just a few seconds, with the Neappoli app. Here's how:

Download Neappoli

First, download the app. iPhone owners can get it from the app store and Android owners can get it from the play store.

Create a profile (it takes a second)

Tap on either the "Profile" or "Submissions" bottom tabs and sign up. For a faster log in, we suggest you login using Google and Facebook login, but you can always use your email.

Enter your profile information

The City of Ottawa requires basic contact information from anyone who reports an issue to 3-1-1. As re-entering this information for every report is unnecessary wasted time, Neappoli requires you to enter your profile information just once and applies it for each subsequent issue you submit to the city.

After logging in, navigate to the "Profile" tab and fill in your information like in the screenshot below. Once completed (don't forget to save your changes!), you are ready to fix those annoying tire-busters.

Please note: we do NOT store any personal information on our servers. All your personal information is stored on your local device, and is only given to the city upon request, using modern encryption of course!

Report a pothole

Reporting a pothole to the City of Ottawa is very straightforward.

Let's head on over to the "Map" tab, and use the "+" button in the bottom left corner of the map.

New service request button

In the next screen, position the target where the pothole is and press "Confirm location" at the bottom. You can also search for an address using the little magnifying glass in the top right part of the screen.

The next screen shows you a number of categories offered by Ottawa’s 311 services. We want to submit a pothole, so we will select "Road maintenance", and then "Pothole on the road".

It’s in the final screen where most of the magic happens. Normally the city would require a TON of information, but luckily we filled that in already. All that's left is a short description - and an optional picture if you want to help the city out even more!. When you’re ready, tap on the “Submit” button in the upper right corner of the screen to send your submission to the city!

Submit issue screen

That's it! Congratulations, you just reported your first pothole using Neappoli! Head on over to the “Submission” tab to see the status of your issues. You will receive a notification as soon as the city fixes your issue.
